In Vocational Education and Training (VET), the required Learning Outcomes for any qualification are, in the final analysis, determined by the Commonwealth Government of Australia rather than an individual RTO. The Government expresses the required outcomes by issuing Training Packages which contain the rules related to the various qualifications such as how many units, core versus electives etc each qualification must contain. All qualifications are composed of Units of Competency (UoC), and it is in the UoC’s the Learning Outcomes are to be found.

The VET language in the UoC’s can be quite confusing and somewhat legalistic in nature and, to those who have not been exposed to “VET speak”, it can be quite confusing trying to interpret the requirements.

In TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment you are initially taught how to interpret the language and requirements found in Training Packages and UoC’s, then you are led through the process of developing the required training and assessment Resources, Instruments and Tools necessary to lead a Learner through a pathway that ensures all Learning Outcomes are being met. Once you can meet both the practical activities and theory requirements of a specific UoC you are found Competent and in TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment you will be found Competent 12 times to earn the qualification.

The Government, through its Regulators approve, monitor and audit all activities of RTO’s related to the legislated requirements and outcomes and, as happens from time to time, RTO’s that take “short cuts” can and do lose their licence to operate within VET.
